Ensign: Tune-up for Peak Performance
|
The following steps should be performed periodically to tune-up Ensign and keep its operation as efficient and speedy as possible:
1. Click menu Setup | Charts, and select the Maintenance tab. Check boxes 7, 8, 9 and 10 and click the Perform Selected Tasks button. This will delete tick based chart files and intra-day chart files that have not been updated in the past N days. The value of N is read from the spinner box.

2. While on the Maintenance form, check boxes 3 and 4 and click the Perform Selected Tasks button. This step should be follow step #1 which erased obsolete chart files. Be patient as this step may take a minute. The Perform button is disabled while the tasks are being accomplished. The button becomes enabled when the tasks are finished. When the tasks are finished, click the OK button to close the form.

3. Visit chart property forms by pressing CTRL+P keys when a chart has focus. Select the Data tab and evaluate whether a smaller Maximum Bars value would be acceptable. The larger the value, the more time it takes to load, resize and save the chart file, and calculate studies owned by the chart. A value of 2000 for Maximum bars and 1900 for Save/Resize bars is recommended.

When a chart accumulates the number of bars specified by Maximum Bars, the chart needs to resize the file to make room for new bars to be added. The resize operation will trim the file back to the Save/Resize Bars value. The example will make room for 100 bars to be added before the resize action is triggered again. A chart file is also trimmed to the Save/Resize Bars count when it is saved.
Some users have the Save/Resize Bars value be less than Maximum Bars by the number of bars that would build on the chart in one day. That way, the chart never triggers a resize operation during the trading session.
4. Click menu Help | Memory Report to see the number of windows open in your workspace, and how many objects are owned by each chart. Be alert to the possibility of an excessive number of chart objects, and open the chart objects list and evaluate if any can be deleted when the count seems excessive.

5. Click menu Setup | Manager and groom the symbol list to remove unused, expired, or unneeded symbols. Keep the symbol list as small as possible. Every symbol added to the list increases the data feed traffic that Ensign has to process. To remove a symbol from the list, click down on the symbol, drag the mouse across the symbol to highlight it, and press the Backspace key.
